Where is ariel from

Plato wrote that Atlantis was located outside the Strait of Gibraltar. This strait connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea. Therefore, the island kingdom is also called Atlantis, after the Atlantic Ocean in which it is supposed to lie. We know that Disney placed the underwater city in the Mediterranean Sea, which only starts on the other side of the strait of Gibraltar, and that the country where Ariel goes on land is Italy.

So my guess would be that Disney placed Atlantica on that other side of the Strait of Gibraltar, and thus in the Mediterranean Sea just in front of Italy. It could be the first country that she sees when she comes to the surface. In Greek mythology , Triton is a water god with a fishtail that lives in the Mediterranean Sea. His parents are Poseidon and Amphitrite. Poseidon is the god of the sea and belongs to the twelve gods of Olympus.

The interesting thing is that according to the myth, Triton lived in a golden palace at Lake Triton Chott el Djerid in Tunisia. Tunisia is located right next to Italy on the African side of the Mediterranean Sea. This is actually very close to where I think Atlantica would be: as I said, between Italy and the Strait of Gibraltar.

So another possible reason, why this might really be where Disney placed Atlantica is in the Mediterranean Sea. In the following, I will present the details from the movie that prove that the movie on land is set in Italy and explain why I think it is the south of Italy and specifically one of the islands: Sardinia or Sicily.

But it is often said that Disney took inspiration from Chillon Castle at Lake Geneva in Switzerland see picture on the right. Chateau de Chillon is located in the French part of Switzerland, very close to the French border and the Italian border too. But this is impossible for two reasons. Firstly, Switzerland is not even located at the sea. And Ariel lives in the ocean as we know. And secondly, why would Dinsey give Louis the chef a French accent if everyone was in a French-speaking place anyway?

My guess would be, that the castle was chosen for inspiration because it has somewhat of an Italian or Roman style. In fact, the city Chillon started as a Roman outpost. And the Romans were Italians after all. Another hint is, that on the blog of Disneypark it is mentioned that their Little Mermaid castle attraction is a Mediterranean-style castle with a Spanish-tile roof.

Where does the Spanish come from? I think it might just mean that the roof tiles are of the Spanish design, but not that the whole castle is Spanish. I also found another small castle called Pepoli Castle that is located in Sicily Italy and looks similar see picture on the left. But that could just be a coincidence and does not necessarily mean that Eric is the prince of Erice.

This town was named after the Greek hero Eryx who was the king of the city. At least that is what it looks like. When Ariel finds Melody. After Morgana is defeated, Ariel is changed back into a human. This sequel features Ariel becoming an over-protective parent for her daughter, effectively taking over the role of her father in the previous film.

As of , Ariel is the only Disney Princess to have been depicted as becoming a mother. Ariel's hair is darker in this film. In the prequel set one year before the events of the film, an opening prologue shows Ariel as a very young mermaid, living a happy life with her father, King Triton, mother, Queen Athena and her six older sisters. After Athena is killed, a devastated King Triton bans all music from Atlantica. Ariel and her sisters grow up not knowing music and living under their father's strict rules.

Ariel eventually discovers a secret underground club where music is played, and there she sings the song "I Remember", which helps her remember her distant past surrounded by love and music. Later with assistance from Sebastian Ariel finds her mother's music box and, after they have a showdown with Marina Del Rey , Triton changes his ways and allows music back into Atlantica. Main article: The Little Mermaid musical A stage musical version of the film had its world premiere in Denver, Colorado in for its pre-Broadway tryout, and on January 10, , debuted on Broadway.

The character of Ariel for the stage adaptation was originated by Sierra Boggess. Jodi Benson, the original voice actor for Ariel, attended the musical's opening night. A few new songs were added to the score, accompanying the songs in the film that were moved to the stage. In Act 2, although Ariel has become mute, she sings two songs expressing her thoughts and feelings, these songs being "Beyond My Wildest Dreams", in which Ariel explores the human world for the first time, and "If Only", in which Ariel bemoans that she cannot express her feelings to Eric.

Additionally, Ariel's voice can be heard in the extended opening of " Fathoms Below ", although she is not seen on-stage. The stage musical features new plot elements not present in the film. It is explained through dialogue that Ariel inherited her mother's singing voice, adding another layer to Triton's protectiveness of her. Ariel and Eric's romance is expanded from the film, as explored in a musical sequence "One Step Closer", in which the pair dance together. In the climatic battle, it is Ariel, not Eric, who destroys Ursula by smashing the magic shell.

The reason for this change was that the musical's creative team did not want Ariel to come off as passive and because it was easier to stage and more dramatic. Ariel makes regular appearances in the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, having a special location called Ariel's Grotto at most of them.

A dark ride based on the movie was designed for Disneyland Paris, but was never built, it has since been announced that a re-designed version of the attraction is to be built as part of the major expansion for Disney's California Adventure.

She is also featured in Fantasmic! Main article: The Little Mermaid video game Taking place after Eric skewered Ursula in the original film, Ariel and Eric are planning to wed, but the sea-witch Ursula somehow resurrected has taken control of the ocean. So Ariel becomes a mermaid once more and sets off to rescue the sea. The game takes place from a side view and Ariel swimming most of the time, but hopping around on the land occasionally can shoot bubbles to trap her foes and can then throw them at each other.

She can also dig through sand to find treasure and pick up sea shells to break chests open with. The treasure she finds in the sand is usually just bonus points, but the treasure you find in chests will increase your bubble's power and range. Although this game is not canon, this exact situation where Ariel had to be turned back into a mermaid would be duplicated in The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea , when she dives off a much larger boat Eric's lead fleet ship rather than his rowboat in the NES game.

The Kingdom Hearts video-game series uses elements from various films in the Disney animated canon, integrating and reinterpreting the stories to fit into the game's plot as the playable characters travel into different kingdoms or "worlds".

The The Little Mermaid film and the kingdom of Atlantica are included as part of the game play. In the first game, Ariel's story is similar to the film, but in addition she's to deal with Ursula's attempt to use the Heartless to defeat King Triton.

Ariel can be one of Sora's party members for this world. She encounters Sora as a merman with a dolphin tail instead , Donald Duck as a male cecaelia, and Goofy as a sea turtle, who claim that they are from a distant ocean to protect the fact that they are from another world.

She is the only Disney Princess featured in the game who is not one of the Princesses of Heart and also the only female fighter to join the party up until Mulan. Within the game, Ariel is duped by Ursula, who also reveals that Sora, Donald, and Goofy are in fact from another world, into giving up her father's trident.

After Atlantica's keyhole is sealed, Sora apologizes to Ariel for lying about their origins, but she lets it slide, confident that, if they could find a way to travel to other worlds, then so can she. In this second game, Ariel is a character in Atlantica; but one in Sora's mind.

Here, Ursula kidnaps Flounder and baits Ariel into stealing her father's trident. Ariel brings Ursula the trident, believing that Flounder has been taken to the human world, and learns the truth when she does. After helping Sora defeat Ursula, she resolves to tell her father what happened. She can be acquired as a Friend card after visiting the Key of Guidance room.

Using the card causes her to swim across the arena, injuring any enemies she strikes. As in the first Kingdom Hearts, Ariel's story is almost a mirror of the film's plot. There are some slight changes from the film, among them being:.

The deal between Ursula and Ariel is made in the Courtyard instead of in Ursula's cave. Instead of Sebastian and Flounder pushing the human Ariel to the surface, Sora drags her to the top by himself. Ariel already has clothes on immediately after her human transformation. On one of her visits to the surface, which are forbidden by her controlling father, King Triton, she falls for a human prince.

Determined to be with her new love, Ariel makes a dangerous deal with the sea witch Ursula to become human for three days. But when plans go awry for the star-crossed lovers, the king must make the ultimate sacrifice for his daughter.

Sea it. Animation Family Fantasy Musical Romance. Did you know Edit. Trivia In the opening scene when King Triton arrives at the arena, Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck and Kermit the Frog can be briefly seen in the crowd of sea-people as mermen when he passes over them. Goofs During "Kiss the Girl", the fish swim up from a depth, but later, when Ariel and Eric fall out of the boat, they are shown in Ursula's ball standing in shallow water. Quotes Sebastian : Hm. Alternate versions For the re-release in , some of the international versions were entirely re-dubbed.

It has been claimed this was due to a bureaucratic error, but the real reason for this action was because the international companies were unhappy with the scripts on the earlier releases and wanted to be more faithful to the original dialogue.

Connections Edited from Pinocchio User reviews Review. Top review. This is my favourite movie of all time I probably never would have seen this movie if my mother hadn't persuaded me to take my little brother to see it. I enjoyed it a lot the first time, but it was only when I saw it again a couple of years later on video I realised just how superb a movie it is. It's not a clever or complex movie, it's not the kind of film which works on an adult level as well as on a children's one.

However, three aspects of it make it truly great: 1: The music. The animation. Quite simply, it's absolutely gorgeous. The underwater scenes in particular take your breath away. She yearns for another world, apart from her own, where she can be free from the limits of her rigid culture and conservative family.

Her body is under the water, but her heart and mind are on land with people. She leads a double life. When Ariel ventures to tell her friends and family about her secret identity, they chastise her and tell her she must conform. Her father, King Triton, even has her followed by a court official. At this point, the movie becomes truly subversive cinema. Conceived by Ashman, Ursula is based on the famous cross-dressing performer Divine, who was associated with the openly gay filmmaker John Waters.

You are in control; you control the show. Ariel can be anything she wants, yet she chooses the role of young bride and human conformity.
