Why isnt hydrangea blooming

Here is the story of Amy-Beth and David [don't miss the great video link after the story]:. Even though you and I have never met nor corresponded, I wanted to express a heartfelt thank you for the plethora of information you provided me via your Hydrangea website. When I met the love of my life he had this enormous green plant next to his house. When I asked him what it was he said "It's supposed to be a hydrangea, but it never blooms. Every year it grows larger and larger I did not know much about hydrangeas at all, but one day I spotted one and realized something was very wrong with ours.

It had beautiful blue flowers on it, and more than just a few. So, I spent some time last year researching and came across your website which provided me all the knowledge I needed. I explained to my dear David that the problem with the Hydrangea was not that it was too old, but that he was cutting it down to the ground every year in November.

He tried to explain to me that if he didn't cut it, we would end up with ugly brown sticks next to the house all winter long. I shared your website with him and pleaded with him to let me try, just this year to not cut back the Hydrangea.

He reluctantly agreed, and every day he would mention how ugly the brown sticks and messy dead leaves were looking. We weathered a terribly snowy winter and never covered the hydrangeaa. I was worried that the bad winter might mean that I might not see the flowers as I had hoped. March came and some new green growth started blooming at the base of the plant. Now can I cut them down?

I stood my ground and resoundingly said "No, wait until May". Related to this article Get to Know Hydrangeas Learn more about the different types of hydrangeas and how to care for them. How to Plant a Shrub Learn how to plant a shrub with these illustrated steps.

The Climbing Hydrangea is a vine with beautiful, lacy white or pink blooms that takes some time to get going, but is a great addition to the garden once it gets going. Now you can look at the reasons why your particular plant has decided not to bloom. Hydrangea macrophylla, Hydrangea petiolaris and Hydrangea quercifolia all bloom on old wood ie.

You can cut the ends off the branches, up to the first set of 2 leaves, if you want to dead head the plants immediately after blooming. And that includes cutting blooms for your dining room table flower arrangement. Both H. So if you live in an area that can get a cold spell after it has been warm for a while like I do in Upstate South Carolina , be prepared to cover them if necessary.

This one sounds a little strange. Fertilizer is supposed to make plants grow better, right? If you want to use fertilizer, one application of a well-balanced slow-release fertilizer in the spring should be enough. If you are looking for a variety that is more likely to grow successfully in dry conditions, try H.

If you live in an area with deer, they may be doing some unneeded pruning for you…and preventing your Hydrangeas from blooming.

This can be a difficult problem to solve as anyone who has tried to stop deer from feasting on their garden probably knows.

Building a 6-foot fence around my yard was the only way I stopped them from coming into my yard. You can find more ways to keep deer out of your yard HERE. The general rule of thumb for most Hydrangeas is that they require about 4 hours of sun per day, and they prefer to get it in the morning. The one exception is H. This standard variety of the Pee Gee Hydrangea beside my deck gets sun almost all day long and it is always covered in blooms.

Solving this problem usually requires moving the plant to a better location…it is much easier to make sure that it is planted in the right place to begin with…. I have an Endless Summer hydranga that I planted about13 years ago. The first year it blossomed buy none since then.

It gets morning and early afternoon sun and watered every day. Why is it not blooming now? I keep threatening to dig it up but …………….. It sounds like yours are getting the right sun exposure, so it may be one of the other reasons. Watering every day may be too much…they like soil that is moist but not wet. Deep watering once a week usually works best.

I cut my hydrangea completely down in the spring and it came back so beautiful with big green leaves but no blooms. I also gave it some hydrangea fertilizer. It stays small. The other one is big and no blooms. What do I need to do to get it to bloom. Hi Mary Ellen…given the difference in size, you may have two different types of Hydrangeas. Since the plant looks healthy, I would let it be and hopefully, it will come around.

Look inside were the buds grow, you my have earwigs eating the buds. I have a problem with this every year. Bayer makes a product to protect your plant from earwigs. Hi Lanye…is it possible that you had a late frost this year? Or that someone accidentally pruned them in the spring? Both of those can prevent them from flowering. The most common reasons for no flowers are pruning at the wrong time or a late frost that kills off the buds.

It can take Hydrangeas 2 or 3 years to get going. Last year our hydrangeas bloomed beautifully for about 2 weeks and then the leaves got brown spots and the blooms turned brown. We cut them back to about 6 inches and they grew back very well, all about 3. We got 0 blossoms. Do you think it was the pruning? Hi Dawn…yes, the buds were probably cut off when they were pruned.

Say you purchased a Nikko Blue Hydrangea this year. So this fall your Nikko is producing blooms that will flower next spring. You would be essentially cutting off your hydrangea blooms for the following spring by pruning the Nikko Blue Hydrangea this fall. Endless Summer is a hydrangea variety that blooms on old and new wood with the idea being the plant will set blooms this fall to blossom not only next spring but will continue to produce blooms next spring to extend the blossoms into next summer.
